Where do Termites Build Nests in Australian Homes?

Bec Dentec • June 17, 2026

Wondering where the little pests are hiding? Right under your nose. Or rather, right inside your walls.

In Aussie homes, termites don't build those massive, rock-hard dirt mounds you see out in the bush. Instead, they hunt down the darkest, dampest, and tightest spots they can squeeze into. Wall cavities, subfloors, roof voids. The hidden edges of concrete slabs.

If you're frantically Googling ‘ what does termite nest look like indoors’, forget the towering outback structures. An indoor colony is basically an ugly, muddy lump. It's a carton-like mass of chewed-up timber, insect spit, and dirt crammed tightly into the hidden gaps of your house.

The Favourite Hideouts

So, where exactly are they setting up camp? They look for moisture, timber, and no disturbances.

  • Wall Cavities: Absolute prime real estate. That gap between your plasterboard and external brickwork? It’s pitch black, the temperature barely changes, and it's literally framed with their favourite food. Pine.
  • Subfloors: Got a house on piers? Pay attention. Damp dirt underneath your floorboards with no breeze is a subterranean goldmine. They build mud tubes straight up the brick piers to reach your floor joists.
  • Roof Voids: A leaky roof. A gutter that overflows every time it rains. A cracked tile. That excess moisture creates a humid, tropical paradise right above your ceiling plaster.
  • Slab Edges: Weep holes, plumbing pipes, and expansion joints. These act like microscopic highways. They bypass your concrete slab and march straight into the structural timber.

Why you Never see Them Coming

Here is the tricky part. You won't see them. Not until it's too late, anyway.

Why? Basic biology. Subterranean termites absolutely hate the light. Open air dries out their soft little bodies and kills them fast. Because of this, they eat your house from the inside out. They'll hollow out a skirting board but deliberately leave a paper-thin layer of paint on the outside just to protect themselves from the sun and air.

You could be leaning against a completely destroyed doorframe right now and have no clue. They are the ultimate silent destroyers.

When to Stop Guessing and Call the Experts

By the time you notice something is wrong; bubbling paint, floors that feel a bit spongy, faint clicking noises at night, or weird mud tubes tracking up your brickwork, that nest isn't new. It’s massive.

Don't wait for a doorframe to cave in when you touch it. If you're in Dubbo or the Central West, hoping they just go away isn't a strategy. You need a proper termite inspection to catch the colony while it's still invisible to the naked eye. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find them hiding behind your walls.

Found a weird patch of mud on the skirting board? Don't poke it. And whatever you do, don't grab the supermarket bug spray. Spooking the workers just makes them panic, retreat, and quietly start eating another part of your house. You need targeted termite control to wipe out the entire colony at the source.
